Pearl Izumi Tour circuit in Stevenage finalised

11 May 2016

World class cyclists will be whizzing around a circuit in the Old Town on Monday 6 June when Stevenage hosts a stage of the men and women’s Pearl Izumi Tour Series. This will be one of the last events for top cyclists ahead of this year’s Olympic Games in Rio.

Stevenage is one of 10 venues across the UK to host a stage of the men’s Pearl Izumi Tour and one of six locations to host the women’s race. Teams will compete to be the fastest in a one-hour, 1.1km circuit race around the Old Town that starts and finishes in the High Street.

The race starts in the High Street and the course takes them right into Basils Road, followed by a right down Church Road before heading right again onto Pound Avenue. When they reach Pound Avenue they will then set themselves up for the final corner and a sprint finish back up the High Street again prior to starting their next lap.

The fun starts at 4.30pm with community activities on the race course before the women’s race gets underway at 6.30pm. As dusk descends, the men will take to the track at 8.30pm for the first ever twilight race to be held in Stevenage.

Roads on the route and some adjoining streets will be closed to accommodate the race as will some car parks. Full details of all road and car park closures will be available at Primett Road car parks will be open as usual and the large car park next to Waitrose will be free all day on Monday 6 June (subject to availability). There will also be a free, secure bike park in Drapers Way for those people who have entered into the cycling spirit.

Councillor Richard Henry, Executive Member for Children, Young People and Leisure said: “We are all really excited that Stevenage is hosting the Pearl Izumi Tour and there is now less than a month to go before the Old Town will be awash with world class cyclists. I hope to see as many people come out and support the riders as possible and there will be lots of fun, free activities taking place on the day, which we will be announcing the details of soon.”
