Stevenage to celebrate local government by taking part in OurDay

16 Nov 2015

From planning and play schemes to refuse and recycling, the hundreds of vital local services of a council will be brought to life in 140 characters when Stevenage Borough Council takes part in a tweetathon on Wednesday 18 November.

The authority will be among many nationwide to tweet using the hashtag #OurDay, giving residents an insight into the hundreds of jobs councils do every day. During OurDay last year more than 8,000 twitter accounts participated, sending more than 10,000 tweets and reaching three million people.

OurDay has been organised by the Local Government Association, which represents more than 370 councils in England and Wales, and the Knowledge Hub.
The LGA is encouraging as many councillors and local authority staff as possible to take a couple of minutes out of their day to tell the world what they’re up to as part of a 24-hour live tweetathon, from 00.01 on Wednesday, by using the hashtag #OurDay.

Councillor Sharon Taylor, Leader of Stevenage Borough Council, said: “OurDay gives us a chance to show the vital work councils do in their communities and to look beyond the obvious like collecting bins. Day in day out our staff provide services that put us at the heart of the town. I would encourage the people of Stevenage to follow @StevenageBC on Twitter and find out what your council does.”
