Stevenage Freeman and former councillor dies

27 Oct 2015

Stevenage Borough Council is sad to learn of the death of Freeman and former Councillor Hilda Lawrence on Friday 23 October at the age of 86.

Hilda was elected as a Stevenage councillor in 1976, serving in Bedwell and Bedwell Plash ward before retiring in 1999. She acted as Mayor in 1989 and drew on her local knowledge to set up the Stevenage Community Trust in 1990.

Hilda was awarded the Freedom of the Borough, the highest honour that a Council of a City or Borough can bestow, on 20 September 2002 in recognition of her exceptional service to Stevenage over the years.

Councillor Sharon Taylor, Leader of Stevenage Borough Council said: “We are all greatly saddened by the news that our friend and former colleague Hilda Lawrence has died. Hilda was a leading light in Stevenage and contributed a great deal to making Stevenage the caring community it is today. In the early days of the new town, Stevenage did not have a hospital and only through sheer, hard lobbying did Hilda manage to persuade the Health Minister to fund what was to become Lister Hospital.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Hilda’s family at this sad time.”
