Councillor Sherma Batson MBE, Mayor of Stevenage and the Coptic Orthodox Church Centre are inviting residents to a special open day on Sunday 26 April to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Shephalbury Manor.

As part of the St George’s Day celebrations, the ‘Celebrate your Manor’ open day will offer people the opportunity to come and learn more about the history of the Manor, take part in information sessions on Coptic heritage and culture and tour the St George Cathedral.

A photography exhibition by Stevenage Museum will be on display on the day showing how Shephalbury Manor has changed over the past 150 years. The Manor, which is now home to the Coptic Orthodox Christian community, was previously the family home of the Heathcote family, as well as a boarding school.

Stevenage Mayor, Councillor Sherma Batson MBE said, “Shephalbury Manor has played an important part in the history of Stevenage and this open day is a fantastic chance for people to learn more about Shephalbury Manor and tour the Coptic Cathedral.”

His Grace Bishop Angaelos, General Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church in the United Kingdom said, “Shephalbury Manor is a core part of the history and heritage of Stevenage and we are inviting the community to take part in celebrating that heritage with us.”

Along with the ‘Celebrate your Manor’ open day, on St George’s Day itself (Thursday 23 April) a service will be held at St George Cathedral presided by Bishop Angaelos and attended by civic dignitaries and ecumenical guests, along with members of the wider Stevenage community.

The ‘Celebrate your Manor’ open day is taking place on Sunday 26 April from 1 to 4.30pm. For more information on the Coptic Church please visit www.copticcentre.com
