Stevenage shines a light on Holocaust Memorial Day

28 Jan 2015

People from across Stevenage joined Stevenage Mayor, Cllr Sherma Batson, at a special ceremony to mark Holocaust Memorial Day yesterday.

The event, which was organised by Stevenage Borough Council and supported by the Stevenage Liberal Synagogue, was a chance to remember all those lost in the holocaust and other genocides.

The Mayor and her guests were joined by Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, Council Leader Cllr Sharon Taylor OBE, Mayors from neighbouring towns, fellow councillors and local religious leaders at the council offices to see the lighting of the memorial candle.

The Mayor said, “Holocaust Memorial Day is about learning from the past to build a better future by promoting equality, respect and understanding, and it was touching to have so many people join us yesterday from different cultures and religions, to remember those that have been lost in the atrocities of the Holocaust and other genocides.”

The theme for this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day, ‘keep the memory alive’, encourages survivors to share their memories of life before, during and after the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.
