Stevenage Youth Council talks teen life

28 Nov 2017

Stevenage pupils who took part in the Stevenage Youth Council conference at the Bowes Lyon Centre on Thursday 23 November have called the event ‘inspirational’.

The theme of year’s conference, chosen by the Youth Council, was ‘Teen Life’. More than 60 pupils from four schools in Stevenage took part in workshops around the theme and heard speeches from Stevenage Mayor, Councillor Pam Stuart, Stevenage Youth Mayor Santino de Freitas, and motivational speaker Jackson Ogunyemi, known as Action Jackson. The annual conference is organised as a joint initiative between Hertfordshire County Council’s YC Hertfordshire and Stevenage Borough Council’s Neighbourhoods and Communities Team.

The workshops gave the young people a chance to discuss a number of issues affecting them, including cyberbullying, street safety and mental health. Pupils said afterwards that they found the day to be ‘inspiring’ and that it had encouraged them to ‘reach their goals’.

The conference was also an opportunity for the young people to vote for the new Chair and Vice Chair of the Youth Council. After the election, Emma Chapman was announced as Chair and Anthony Vincent as the Vice Chair.

Cllr Richard Henry, Executive Member for Children, Young People and Leisure said: “Stevenage Youth Council’s conference is a brilliant way for young people to come together and discuss some really important subjects for coping with life as a teenager. The feedback we’ve received so far is fantastic, and I hope the students have taken away some valuable life skills.

“The Youth Council is here to give young people a voice in the town, and it would be great to get more young people involved so they can speak on issues that affect them.”

Stevenage Youth Mayor, Santino de Freitas, said: “The Youth Conference was a great experience and we had planned it for months. Thank you to everyone that came along as it wouldn’t have been possible without them. I had great pleasure in learning and presenting, and also recruiting Youth Council Members.”

Stevenage Youth Council is supported by Stevenage Borough Council’s Community Development team and Hertfordshire County Council’s Youth Connexions. To find out more about the Youth Council, contact or follow them on Twitter @StevenageYouthC.
