Stevenage Play Champions among the best in the UK

09 Nov 2017

Stevenage Borough Council’s Play team has been selected as a shortlisted finalist in the Team of the Year category for the 2018 LGC Awards.

The awards, run by Local Government Chronicle, are the biggest and most prestigious within the local government sector.  The winners will be announced in a ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House venue on 21 March 2018.

Stevenage’s seven-strong team of play workers, along with their supporters and volunteers have, this year, celebrated half a century of providing services to the children of the town. The award judges were impressed by the team’s drive and passion to provide the highest quality of experience, care and support for their young clients and their focus on individual needs.

Cllr Richard Henry, Executive Member for Children, Young People and Leisure at Stevenage Borough Council, said, “This is an extremely well-deserved and hard-earned accolade for our Play team, and coming in the Golden Jubilee year makes it even more special. Our play workers consistently demonstrate enormous commitment and enthusiasm for their work, have a positive attitude and always try their best to meet all the weird and wonderful requests that they get.

“All the children who come along to our play centres benefit from the team’s creativity, hard work and dedication and, if I asked them, I know they’d say the play workers were the best in the world. Congratulations to everyone involved!”

Nearly 100 organisations have been shortlisted as finalists in the coveted awards, which recognise the best of local government innovation and service delivery. LGC editor Nick Golding said: “To be shortlisted for an LGC Award shows a council service is among the country’s most innovative, and doing the most to support the needs of local residents as councils face continuing budget cuts. We should salute the council officers and councillors doing the most to ensure our vital public services thrive in the era of austerity.”

Winners will be announced on 21 March 2018. The full list of finalists can be found at
