Celebration event says thank you to town’s fabulous volunteers

28 Jul 2017

Some of Stevenage’s incredible volunteers who support the council and help to look after the town were celebrated at a special event yesterday afternoon (27 July).

Across the town, volunteers work with Stevenage Borough Council and other organisations to help improve the town’s green spaces for people and wildlife, support activities at play centres, organise health walks and Park Run, support Stevenage Museum, challenge and scrutinise the housing service, and run local resident groups.

The celebration event, at Stevenage Golf Club, was a thank you to the volunteers who make such a difference in the town, giving hundreds of hours of community support each year.

Cllr Simon Speller, Executive Member for Neighbourhoods and Co-operative Council at Stevenage Borough Council, said: “This event was an excellent chance for the Council to celebrate our volunteers and show how much we value their contribution. The council just would not be able to run so many activities and keep our town clean and green without these very special people. We are grateful for all the time, energy and commitment they give each year. With their support and leadership we are together making the town a better place for everyone.”

Volunteer Sue Greene said: “The friends I have made since joining Green Space Volunteers have been amazing, we all have the same thing in common so all get on so well. You can do as much or as little as you feel capable of on the day, there's no competition. I would certainly recommend it, it’s great fun and rewarding.”

Our neighbourhood is a co-operative project which sees local people working with the council to improve their neighbourhoods. This month, people living in Pin Green have set out their shared commitments for the area in a series of Neighbourhood Agreements. Anyone interested in contributing should contact Pin Green Residents’ Group. They meet in Hampson Park Community Centre café on the last Thursday of each month, 6.30pm to 8.30pm and can also be contacted on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/1682776145319416/.
