Rain doesn’t dampen Stevenage Day 2016

14 Jun 2016

Thousands of people braved the rain showers on Sunday to enjoy a bumper line up of music, dance, entertainment and attractions at the 57th Stevenage Day.

Stevenage Day 2016 was extra special this year as it celebrated the 70th anniversary of Stevenage as a New Town. Rock in the Park music festival returned at the family fun day and up-and-coming band Room 94 performed on a new main stage while local talent including Roxy Searle entertained an acoustic stage.

Stevenage Day fell on Her Majesty The Queen’s official 90th birthday weekend and the Mayor of Stevenage was on hand to relight the Queen’s Beacon. Dance groups and drumming acts wowed the crowds, while Specialist Cars, who supported this year’s event, demonstrated their electric cars. Stalls from local community groups, businesses and charities also provided something for all at one of the biggest events of its kind in Hertfordshire.

Councillor Richard Henry, Executive Member for Children, Young People and Leisure said: “Stevenage Day 2016 was a huge success despite the weather. The day will live long in my memory and it was the perfect occasion to help celebrate the 70th anniversary of Stevenage. I’d like to say a huge thank you to the staff, community groups and individuals who worked incredibly hard to make the day a success. I would also like to thank Specialist Cars and all our other sponsors for their support this year. I’m looking forward to next year’s event already.”

Stevenage Day will return in June 2017. For more information, or to register your interest in taking part in next year’s event, please call the council’s Leisure Services Manager on 01438 242206 or email Stevenage.day@stevenage.gov.uk
