Councillors agree Stevenage council house rent levels

Stevenage councillors this week (Tuesday 26 January) agreed council house rents and service charges for the next 12 months. As a result of recent government legislation, many council tenants in Stevenage will see a 1% reduction in the amount of rent they pay.

Councillors’ decision will see service charges - for those 2,932 council tenants who pay them - rise by an average of £1.44 per week from 1 April 2016. More than 5,700 households will benefit from a rent reduction, and around 1,700 households will have an increase of less than £2.10 a week.

Councillor Ann Webb, Executive member for Housing, said, “This council is committed to providing good quality housing that people in Stevenage can afford. Despite unhelpful government policies, we will continue to work hard to support our tenants through the impact of benefit changes.

“Rent for the average three-bedroom council property in the town will be £108.12 per week, excellent value for our tenants and less than half of the average weekly private rent for a three-bedroom of £230. Stevenage council house rents remain among the lowest in the county.

“While I fully recognise that the 1% rent reduction will be welcomed by our valued tenants, it’s clear that the Government has not considered the medium to longer term implications of this policy which will result in significantly reduced investment in social housing infrastructure as well as cutting the funding we have to invest in new stock.”
