Stevenage Mayor welcomes Women’s Tour cyclist

05 Jun 2015

Stevenage Mayor Cllr Howard Burrell today joined some young enthusiasts to welcome professional cyclist Katie Archibald to the town ahead of the Women’s Tour stage finish in the High Street on Saturday 20 June.

Katie spent the day in Stevenage meeting local people to talk about her experience of being a professional rider and the Women’s Tour, the largest annual women’s cycling event in the world. She also took part in PE lessons at Barclay School and Thomas Alleyne School, before meeting Fairlands Primary school pupils to survey the race finish line in the Old Town.

Stevenage Mayor, Cllr Howard Burrell said, “It was good to welcome Katie here today, she’s a great role model and the youngsters enjoyed talking to her. We’re all very excited that the Women’s Tour is coming to Stevenage on Saturday 20 June and I hope to see lots of local people out watching these world class cyclists race down the High Street towards the finish line. Who knows, they may inspire some future sporting champions!”

Katie Archibald rides for British domestic team, Pearl Izumi Sports Tours International, who will be taking part in the 2015 Aviva Women’s Tour for the first time. Katie rode the inaugural version of the race for Great Britain in 2014.
