New Mayor of Stevenage

28 May 2015

The Mayor of Stevenage for 2015/16, Councillor Howard Burrell has taken office.

Howard has been a Stevenage Borough Councillor, representing Chells Ward, for eight years and was Executive Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure from May 2008.

Outside of local politics, Howard’s passion lies in music. He graduated from Queen’s University in Belfast, and then joined the University of Hertfordshire in 1972. During his time there, Howard built one of the largest electronic music departments in the country. He was honoured with Emeritus Professor of Music in 1992 and made Fellow of the University of Hertfordshire in 2011.

Over the years, Howard has developed and conducted the Hatfield Philharmonic Orchestra, led his own professional opera company, released his own music and composed a range of symphonies, overtures and arrangements.

His other passion is sport. He was a keen cricket player at Hatfield and is a season ticket holder at Stevenage Borough Football Club, Honorary Vice-President of Stevenage Rugby Club and a member of Chesfield Downs Golf Course.

Howard lives with his partner Jennifer, who will be Mayoress, in Symonds Green. He has four grown-up children, Sarah, Edward, Charlie and Simon.

The new Mayor said, “It’s a great honour being able to represent Stevenage as Mayor for this year and I’m looking forward to meeting lots of residents, charities and organisations here in Stevenage and wider afield.”

For this year, Cllr Burrell is raising money for the charities Riding for the Disabled and the Stevenage Arts Guild.

The Deputy Mayor is Councillor John Lloyd.
