02 Feb 2015

Stevenage and North Herts councils are encouraging local residents not yet registered to vote to take advantage of National Voter Registration Day on 5 February and go online now to register.

There are fewer than 100 days until voters go to the polls to elect a Member of Parliament for Stevenage, North East Hertfordshire, and Hitchin and Harpenden. Local elections are also taking place on the same day in both Stevenage and North Herts. Anyone not registered can do so at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

Nick Parry, Electoral Registration Officer for Stevenage said, “It’s important that anyone who isn’t registered to vote should do so as soon as possible in order for them to have their say on issues that affect their lives. With National Registration Day taking place on Thursday, I’d encourage everyone to spread the message amongst friends and family who may not have registered yet, that it will only take a few minutes to complete the form online and give them the chance to have their say in the upcoming national and local elections.”

David Scholes, the Returning Officer for North Herts said, “It is important to be able to have your say and exercise your right to vote in the national and local elections and National Voter Registration Day highlights to those not yet registered to vote to do so. With this looking to be an interesting General Election this year and an important event for North Herts with the election of 16 councillors, we encourage residents to make sure they are registered in advance of the elections so that they can vote”.

Kay Jenkins, Head of English regions at the Electoral Commission, said, “National Voter Registration Day exists because it’s important that anyone who’s eligible to be on the register, but has not yet registered, does so. Young people, students and people who move frequently are much less likely to be registered to vote. We’re urging them to use the day as an opportunity to get onto the electoral register.”

All Stevenage homes will this week receive a letter with details of who is currently on the electoral register for that property. North Herts homes have already received their letters. Anyone living at the property, but whose name is not on the letter, should register to vote at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
