Food recycling is now easier with compostable bags

19 Sep 2011

We are now able to accept compostable bags made from corn starch and other vegetable based products. The bags can help keep your bin odour free and reduce any problems with flies.

Up until now the plant we take our organic waste to has not accepted compostable bags. You said that you would like to make food waste recycling cleaner and more convenient, so we have negotiated with the plant so that compostable bags can now be used.

The compostable bags which we can accept must have the compostable logo on them.

If this logo is not printed on the bag we are unable to collect it.

How To Use Them:

1. Put the compostable bag into the caddy

3. Place into brown bin

You do not have to use compostable bags to recycle your food waste. Food waste can be wrapped in newspaper and paper bags can also be used.

FAQs:

1. Do I have to use compostable bags?

Using compostable bags is optional. You can recycle your food waste by wrapping it in newspaper or by using paper bags.

2. What size compostable bags can I use?

Compostable bags which are 5-7 litres should comfortably fit into the caddy, although any size of compostable bag will be collected from the brown bin.

3. Which brands of compostable bags can I use?

Compostable-Logo

As long as the compostable bag carries this logo, we will accept it.

4. Where can I purchase compostable bags?

Compostable bags are available from most supermarkets as well as online.

5. Can I use bags which are biodegradable or degradable?

These bags may not break down sufficiently at the composting site where the organic waste goes to.  If the bags do not have the compostable logo please do not use them.
