Licensing and street trading

Information on licences the Council is responsible for administering

  • Alcohol and entertainment licences
    This may be used on a limited basis for temporary events involving licensable activities at premises that do not have a premises licence.
  • Animal licences
    Licences are required to keep certain animals, and also for businesses that deal with animals.
  • Building and construction licences
    For businesses that supply skips or scrap metal
  • Food premises registration
    To store, prepare, distribute or sell food on premises you need to be registered with the local authority. Premises include restaurants, cafes, hotels, shops, canteens, market stalls, mobile catering vans and food delivery vans.
  • Gambling and lottery licences
    Information about licences for running amusements and lotteries
  • Stage Hypnotism permit
    Application for consent to conduct an exhibition, demonstration or performance of hypnotism under Hypnotism Act 1952
  • Skin piercing treatments licence
    To perform tattooing, acupuncture, ear and body piercing and electrolysis both the person and premises must be registered.
  • Fairground licence
    Persons wishing to operate a fair on private or council owned land are required to give the Council notice prior to the holding of the event.
  • Street trading and collections
    Licences are required for trading or collections that take place in the street.
  • Sunday trading notification
    Large shops (those with an internal sales area of over 280m2) must only open for six hours of trading on a Sunday, which must be between the hours of 10am and 6pm. Smaller shops may trade freely on a Sunday.
  • Sex shop and cinema licence
    Information about how to apply for a licence to run a sex shop or open a venue where explicit films are shown to members of the public.
