How to apply for supported housing
Information on who is eligible to apply, how they can do so and how their application will be considered.
Supported housing is a flat or bungalow especially designed with the needs of elderly people in mind. It is run and maintained by the Council and is usually available to residents in the local area who feel that they require support to live independently.
You can find out more about supported housing by clicking on this link: What living in supported housing is like
Who can apply
Any person of pensionable age who feels they need some support may apply, but priority will be given to those who live in Stevenage and do not own their own home.
Homeless people who fit eligibility criteria (age and need) can apply for supported housing and will be assessed for suitability. Where they do not fit eligibility they will be considered for other Council housing in the normal way.
How to apply
You should apply by writing to:
Housing Services
Stevenage Borough Council
Daneshill House
Danestrete

SG1 1HN
If necessary, someone else, like a friend or social worker may do this for you.
If you are already on the Council’s Housing Needs Register you can simply request a revision form and indicate on it that you are interested in being considered for supported housing.
How your application will be considered
People who live in Stevenage and are not homeowners will normally be prioritised under Band A of our Housing Needs Register (depending on their circumstances). Band A applicants will be considered first when a vacancy arises.
Once your application has been accepted onto our Housing Needs Register it is awarded a number of points to reflect the conditions in which you currently live. Points are given for factors such as medical conditions, overcrowding and lack of modern facilities. Points are also awarded for the length of time you have been on the Housing Needs Register. As vacancies arise they will be offered to the Band A applicant with the most points for that particular property type.
Other people, including those who live outside Stevenage or who own their own home, will be prioritised in Band B of the Register. This means that they will only be considered for a vacancy if there is no demand from Band A. Their application will be awarded points in the same way as Band A applications.
There are two property types that are less popular and therefore often available to Band B applicants. These are supported studio flats and supported one-bedroom flats on the first floor but without a lift.
All applicants for supported housing will be interviewed to discuss their suitability for supported housing and their particular needs. For example, we will not offer first floor flats without a lift to anyone who has even minor mobility problems. Band B Applicants who live outside Stevenage will have to travel to Stevenage for this interview to take place.
What will happen once you have been made an offer
Any offer will be confirmed in writing. Should you wish to view the scheme and meet the Supported Housing Officer this can be easily arranged.
