How to take out Home Contents Insurance

Advice on how to take out Home Contents Insurance including the necessary forms. The Council does not automatically insure the contents of its properties.

The Council manages and maintains tenants' homes but does not insure tenants' personal belongings, household goods and contents. The Council would strongly recommend that all tenants take out household contents insurance.

Many Council tenants believe that the Council automatically insure their furniture, belongings and decorations against fire, theft, vandalism or water damage such as burst pipes. This is not the case. Unfortunately, some tenants only realise this after the damage has been done.

How to take out Home Contents Insurance

The Council has arranged a special scheme which is open to all tenants and owner occupiers. Under this scheme it is easy for you to protect your belongings at a special low cost rate.

To ensure that you are always covered you must keep your payments up to date. Failure to do so could affect any claim settlement and will lead to the cancellation of your insurance.

Premiums can be paid by cash at any Post Office fortnightly or monthly using a swipe card, monthly by direct debit or annually by cheque, postal order or debit/credit card.

It is important not to undervalue your contents otherwise the insurer will not pay the full value of your claim.
