Council Garages - General Information

Garage Management Services deal with the management and letting of Council owned garages. They are a small team aiming to improve customer service in all aspects of garage management and maintenance.

There are a number of garages available for rent across the town. See the links below to apply for a garage.

Opening Hours - Monday to Thursday 9am til 5pm & Friday 9am til 4pm

Availability varies across the town and we cannot guarantee that you will be offered a garage in your chosen area immediately. If this is the case then your name will be entered onto a waiting list and once your turn has been reached a letter formally offering a garage will be sent to you. However, we do have a number of garages which are available for immediate let, click the link below to see the areas where these garages are available.

Whilst lock up garages are, by definition, designed for the parking of a motor vehicle they can also provide suitable facilities for the storage of domestic items in areas of low demand where there are currently no parking problems. Petrol or any other flammable material should not be stored in them under any circumstances and subletting is not permitted. Further guidance notes will be issued before commencement of garage tenancy.

Rental Charges

There is a difference in charges for Council and Non-Council Tenants because VAT has to be added for Non-Council tenant accounts. VAT is levied by Customs and Excise not the Council.

Garage Mutual Exchanges

Existing tenants can apply to exchange garages. The request needs to be put in writing and sent to Garage Management Services at the address above. Only one letter is required but both tenants must sign the letter.

Termination of Council Garage Tenancy

If you already rent a garage and wish to terminate the tenancy you should give one weeks advance notice, ending on a Sunday. Termination can only be taken in writing or a form can be downloaded and returned to the above address. The garage should be cleared of any items before the keys are returned.

The garage keys must be returned by midday on the Monday following the termination date. The amount of keys signed for at the start of tenancy must be returned or a charge of £21.42 will be applied. If keys are returned late the Council will continue to charge rent until the keys are returned and if the garage needs to be cleared of any items there is a minimum charge of £44.

Any account arrears will need to be brought up to date including the rent for the one-week termination period. If this is the case you will be notified in writing.

Repairs

Requests for a garage to be repaired should be to made to the Repairs Control Centre by telephoning 01438 211011. Alternatively you can report your repair using the online form below:

If however, a repair has been carried out and you are dissatisfied with the quality of the work you should contact the Garage Management Services team on 01438 242577.

Payment methods

Garage rental charges can be paid monthly (one month in advance) by direct debit. Payments are due on the first of each month. For further payment methods please see our 'How to Pay' section.
