Community Investment

When we appoint contractors to help look after and improve your homes, we ask them to make a variety of community investment commitments. The housing contractors the Breyer Group; Wates Living Space; Lakehouse and United Living carried out these community investments during 2016-2017:

United Living held an open day to provide information for more than 300 residents having external and roofing renovations works completed on their council homes.

All contractors jointly sponsored a photograph exhibition in the Pi Bistro and Gallery at Stevenage Arts and Leisure Centre. The exhibition was managed by the Stevenage Photographic Society and featured many local photographs.

  • The Breyer Group helped with the Ashtree Wood School garden project. They transformed overgrown beds to create an area for the school children to grow flowers and vegetables.

  • The Breyer Group arranged for top soil for the new raised flower beds at a supported housing scheme.
  • Staff from United Living spent a full day at The Haven to tidy, dig and weed the overgrown garden following the redevelopment of the building. They provided some raised bedding areas ready to be planted with plants or flowers.
  • The Breyer Group donated £500 to the Mayor’s charities, The Phoenix Group and Garden House Hospice.
  • All contractors use local labour on their contract where possible.
  • Two apprenticeships were completed and a trainee was given a permanent job with the Breyer Group.
  • All contractors worked with the Job Centre Plus (JCP) to hold employability workshops. This helped JCP clients develop their CV’s, complete job application forms and impress potential employers with their improved interview skills.
  • At the end of their contract Wates Living Space provided residents with energy advisor training. This enabled residents to learn about and share with others, how to switch energy providers and save money on energy costs.
  • United Living visited various local schools to deliver either health and safety talks to pupils
or a presentation on careers in construction.
