Demand for Garages

Please note that due to the high demand of our service your garage application will not be acknowledged immediately. You will be contacted by a member of the garage team if a suitable garage becomes available.

To apply for a garage you can apply online or download an application form and return it to Garage Management Services at the address on the right.

Opening Hours:
Monday to Thursday 9am til 5pm
Friday 9am til 4pm

All applications to rent a Council garage are subject to credit checks.

Availability varies across the town and we cannot guarantee that you will be offered a garage in your chosen area immediately. If this is the case then your name will be entered onto a waiting list. When your name has reached the top of the list a letter formally offering a garage will be sent to you.

Whilst lock up garages are, by definition, designed for the parking of a motor vehicle they can also provide suitable facilities for the storage of domestic items in areas of low demand where there are currently no parking problems. Petrol or any other flammable material should not be stored in them under any circumstances and subletting is not permitted. Further guidance notes will be issued before commencement of garage tenancy.

Rental Charges

Garage rental charges vary by demand / size, but as a guide our highest standard charges are: 

  • Council tenants £10.35 per week
  • Non-council tenants £12.42 per week

For premium garages (where the garage provides and additional parking space directly in front of the garage on the hard standing):

  • Council tenants £11.10 per week
  • Non-council tenants £13.32 per week

There is a difference in charges for council and non-council tenants because VAT has to be added for non-council tenant accounts. VAT is levied by Customs and Excise not the council.  

Garage transfer applications

Anyone who currently rents a garage can apply for a garage transfer.

Termination of council garage tenancy

If you already rent a garage and wish to terminate the tenancy you should give one weeks advance notice, ending on a Sunday. Termination notice can be given by:

The garage should be cleared of any items before the keys are returned.

The garage keys must be returned by midday on the Monday following the termination date. The amount of keys signed for at the start of tenancy must be returned or a charge of £22.25 will be applied. If keys are returned late we will continue to charge rent until the keys are returned. If the garage needs to be cleared of any items there is a minimum charge of £66.

Any account arrears will need to be brought up to date including the rent for the one-week termination period. If this is the case you will be notified in writing.

Repairs

Requests for a garage to be repaired should be made online using the following link report a garage repair.

If you have an out of office hours emergency repair, please call our emergency out of hours telephone number 01438 314963 (between 5pm and 8am the next day). Please be aware that there is a standard charge of £100 plus VAT if you call out the emergency team and it is found not to be genuine emergency or if access, if required, has not been made available.

If however, a repair has been carried out and you are dissatisfied with the quality of the work you should contact the Building Surveyor on 01438 242577.

Payment methods

Garage rental charges can be paid monthly (one month in advance) by direct debit. Payments are due on the 1st or 15th of each month.
