Food Safety

Our team is responsible for ensuring that all food sold in Stevenage is clean and safe for the consumer to eat. Any premises which stores, prepares, produces, cooks or sells food must comply with strict hygiene standards.

  • Food safety inspections
We carry out regular checks on all food premises to ensure the public is protected and that high standards are maintained. Following an inspection a business is given a certificate, which includes a score ranging from 0 (poor) to 5 stars (excellent).
  • Food hygiene rating scheme
When a food business is inspected it is given a hygiene rating that reflects the findings made at the time of the visit.
  • Food safety regulations
The Food Safety Act 1990 and regulations made under it, make it an offence for anyone to sell or process food for sale which is harmful to health.
  • Food poisoning and food borne illnesses
We investigate food poisoning and certain other food borne illnesses to prevent the spread of illness within the community and to try and establish possible causes.
