Household collection - recycling

The Council provides a weekly kerbside collection service for recycling paper, glass and cans.

Click here to find out when your recycling collection day is.

How the scheme works

Each household has been issued with two plastic boxes to collect paper, glass and cans for recycling.

Alternative arrangements are being made for residents of flats and these will be notified separately.

Boxes should be placed out for emptying on refuse collection days by 8am (refuse and garden waste must be available for collection by 7am).

Boxes should be placed on the property boundary closest to road access so that they are clearly visible from the road.

If nobody in the household is able to carry the boxes to the boundary because of chronic illness or disability, special arrangements will be made as for the refuse service. Telephone 0800 0527007 for details. If you are registered for special refuse collections you will automatically be added to this list and need take no action.

What should go in the boxes?

BLUE BOX

One half:

Other half:

PLEASE DO NOT INCLUDE CARDBOARD OF ANY SORT:- Cardboard can be recycled at the Household Waste Site on Caxton Way

RED BOX

PLEASE DO NOT INCLUDE: PYREX, SHEET GLASS, LIGHT BULBS OR DRINKING GLASSES

Please don't include other materials

Inclusion of other items will cause loads to be rejected by recycling companies.

If you include other items they will be left in the boxes for you to dispose of, the vehicles have no way of carrying them.

If materials are left in your box, please don't be deterred from using the scheme. You will be left a leaflet to remind you what can be collected.

What happens for Bank Holidays?

Recycling collections will change to the same day as your altered refuse collection

What if your boxes are missed?

If the boxes were not on your property boundary by 8am on your collection day, please keep your recyclables for the following week or take them to recycling banks.

If your boxes were out at this time and were clearly visible from the road, please where possible do as above. If you are unable to do so or you are being missed regularly, please telephone 0800 0527007 and arrangements will be made to return to your address.

You can also report a missed bin using the online form.

What if you need extra boxes?

In special cases where a need can be justified additional boxes will be supplied.

Additional boxes can't be purchased for other uses

What if your boxes need replacing?

What if you don't want to take part in the scheme?

The scheme is provided for your benefit, please use it.

The boxes remain the property of Stevenage Borough Council. If you do not take part in the scheme and fail to leave your boxes out for collection, you will be asked to return them.

The boxes are provided for use with this scheme only. Improper use will result in their removal.

Why aren't other materials collected for recycling?

The materials collected are those that we believe offer the greatest potential for waste reduction at the least cost. It is hoped that more might be collected in the future, but this depends on the success of the scheme so please use it.

Freecycle

Freecycle uses the internet to connect local individuals looking to give something away to those who want it.  The aim is to reduce waste in Stevenage by giving unwanted items to a new home.

Through a simple e-mail list, any member of the community can post a note about an item they'd like to give away, or an item they are seeking. The only rule: every item posted must be free. See the Freecycle website for more information.
