Household Waste Recycling Centre
The household Waste Recycling Centre on Caxton Way is a free service provided by Hertfordshire County Council.
Unacceptable Waste Products
What cannot be accepted at the recycling centre.
The County Council is not obliged to provide a free waste disposal service for waste from works of construction, demolition or excavation and even from household DIY. In deciding what would be classed as construction, demolition or excavation waste is that it is material or items that you would not normally take with you if you moved house.
If you have items that cannot be accepted at the household waste site you can use our household special waste collection service, see the link below for further information.
Small quantities of these waste products can be accepted but ‘small’ is defined as the amount of material that will fit into the boot of a ‘normal’ saloon car and only one boot full per month will be accepted.
The following maximum limits will apply for specific individual materials but the mixtures of materials will reduce the individual material quantity, e.g. 2 full dustbin bags of soil but only 4 doors in the same single visit.
- 4 full dustbin bags, or equivalent, of soil, rubble, bricks, plaster
- 8 doors
- 1 bathroom suite (1 bath, 1 sink, 1 toilet and cistern)
- 4 small kitchen cupboards
- 2 large kitchen cupboards
- 1 small shed
- 1 small greenhouse
- 3 fence panels (6' x 6') and 4 posts
Please do not attempt to dispose of construction, demolition or excavation materials that exceed the above limits.
Larger quantities can be disposed of privately by any of the following methods, although there is likely to be a charge for using the service.
- Hiring a skip or a ‘skip bag’.
- Employing a registered private waste disposal site or recycling company to collect your waste.
- Delivering your waste to a licensed private disposal or recycling company.
Yellow Pages is a good source of information for local companies and sites offering these services, you can also visit their website: www.yell.com.
