Household Waste Recycling Centre

The household Waste Recycling Centre on Caxton Way is a free service provided by Hertfordshire County Council.

Acceptable Waste Products

What can be accepted at the recycling centre.

Cans and Foil - these are shredded and recycled into new steel and aluminium products.

Car Batteries - these are completely recycled. The lead is reused and the plastic made into a range of plastic products.

Engine Oil - is cleaned and recycled into lower grade engine oil and fuel for heating.

Fluorescent Tubes - these are crushed under vacuum. The mercury is separated and reused and the glass and aluminium recycled.

Fridges and Freezers - these are processed to separate the materials; aluminium, steel, copper and plastics to remove the CFC’s from the cooling circuits and insulation foams.

Glass - bottles and jars are separated into their various values, clear and brown glass, which tend to be higher grade, is made into new bottles and jars and the green glass is used as a secondary aggregate in road building.

Green Garden Waste - is shredded and composted to make soil improver.

Household Batteries - these are shredded and the materials recycled into a range of products.

Mobile Phones - these can be reused in developing countries.

Paper - waste paper and magazines are broken down and reconstituted into paper that is used for newspapers and low grade packaging.

Plastic Bottles - once sorted into their different types of plastic they are shredded and used to make a range of products like furniture, fleece material and other plastic goods.

Scrap Metal - this is recycled into a range of products via a network of scrap dealers.

Textiles - good quality clothing is cleaned and re-used while poorer quality clothing is recycled into industrial wipes.

Toners and Inkjet Cartridges - Toner cartridges are remanufactured into new cartridges. Inkjet cartridges are cleaned and refilled.

Tyres - these are formed into large bales that be used in coastal defences and for road building in landfill sites.

Wood - this is recycled into various board products like chipboard and MDF.
