Garden waste
A Garden Waste Collection Service is offered to all houses in Stevenage. Residents of flats who maintain their own gardens can also arrange to take part in the scheme by contacting the Council
The service offers fortnightly collections using brown wheeled bins, which are provided by the Council.

How the scheme works
To ensure that your bin is emptied please make sure:
- It is on the boundary of your property closest to road access
- It is clearly visible from the street
- It is available for collection by 7.00am
- It only includes the correct materials:
- Grass cuttings
- Hedge cuttings
- Small branches not more than 50mm (2") thick and 500mm (20") long
- Leaves
- Flowers and plants
- Prunings
- Straw bedding (from rabbits and guinea pigs)
Do Not Include
- Food Scraps
- Vegetable peelings
- Wind fall fruit
- Plastic Bags or wrappings
- Cardboard
- Flower pots/seed trays
- Soil
- Concrete/rubble
- Coal Ash
- Other household waste
If incorrect materials are included in your bin it will not be emptied. Please do not use the bin for rubbish or put material for composting in the bin within plastic bags.
Please do not make your bin too heavy, you should be able to comfortably manoeuvre it. If your bin is too heavy, the vehicle lifting mechanism can’t tip it and we will be unable to empty it.
Please do not put your bin out any earlier than the morning of collection unless absolutely unavoidable.

Arrangement for seriously ill or disabled people
Arrangements will automatically be made for people who receive special collections for refuse and recycling. If you believe that no person in your household is able to put out for collection because of serious illness or disability please contact us on Freephone 0800 0527007 or email wastewizard@stevenage.gov.uk
Residents living in flats
Residents living in flats will not initially be included in the scheme as in many cases grounds are maintained by contractors. If you would like to be included because you care for your own area of garden, please contact us.
