Elections - Electoral Register

A record of everyone who lives within the boundaries of the local authority and who is eligible to vote at elections.

The revised Register of Electors which operates from 1st December 2007 to 30th November 2008 inclusive was published on 1st December 2007. A copy of the full Register is held at the Reception Desk at the Council Offices at Daneshill House, Danestrete, Stevenage and members of the public are welcome to call there during normal working hours to check that their details, if eligible for inclusion, are contained in that Register and that the details are correct.

Any queries on this matter should be referred to the Council’s Electoral Services Office either by E-Mail – electoral@stevenage.gov.uk or by telephone – Stevenage (01438) 242213 or 242174.

The electoral register must be kept in two versions, full, which includes all electors and edited, which only includes those electors who have given permission for their details to be on the list. The edited version may be sold commercially.

A recent change to the law now means that you can add your name to the register of electors at any time throughout the year.

If you do not register then you cannot exercise your democratic right to vote in any election. It may also lead to problems obtaining credit as credit reference companies rely on the Register for background information.

The council has the option of taking legal proceedings against householders who fail to return their registration form, but has not had to resort to that option in recent years.

You can check the Electoral Register at the Main Reception, Daneshill House, Danestrete, Stevenage.

Complete back files are held at the County Records Office of Hertford.

The edited register leaves out the names and addresses of people who have asked for them to be excluded from that version of the register. The edited register can be bought by anyone who asks for a copy, and they may use it for any purpose.

If you apply to the Electoral Services section for a Rolling Register form to add your details to the Register a form (or forms as required) will be sent to your home address.

If appropriate, we will also inform the Electoral Registration Officer for your old address that you have moved, so that your name can be removed from that register. People who live at two homes are generally advised to register at just one of these addresses.  However, students are allowed to register at both. If you do not want to be removed from your other address please explain why on your form.

There are special rules about names being added to the voters list during an election period.  You may not be able to vote at that election if you are added during this time.  The Electoral Services section will advise on such queries or provide clarification.
