Elections - Electoral Register

A record of everyone who lives within the boundaries of the local authority and who is eligible to vote at elections.

A record of everyone who lives within the boundaries of the local authority and who is eligible to vote at elections.

There are two versions of the electoral register – the full and the edited.  You can check the registers at the Daneshill House, Danestrete, Stevenage.

The full register contains the name and addresses of everyone registered to vote and can only be viewed under supervision.  If you require an appointment to view this register please call 01438 242213 to arrange a time.

The edited register leaves out the names and addresses of people who have asked for them to be excluded from that version of the register.  It can be bought by anyone who asks for a copy, and they may use it for any purpose.

How to add your name

Once a year, during the annual canvass period of September, October and November, a Voter Registration Form is sent to every household for you to fill in and the revised register is published on the 1 December.

You can only register if you are a British, Irish, Commonwealth or European Union citizen.

Between December and August, you can register to vote at any time by filling in a Rolling Registration Form.  You need to sign your own form – someone else cannot do it for you.

How long does it take to register to vote?

Electoral law specifies the cut-off date each month that we need to receive the form back in the Electoral Services Office, in order for it to be included in the following month’s alterations to the register.  The relevant dates for this year are:

When you send us your completed, signed form we will add you to our list of new applications.  Any elector can then object to your name being added to the register.  If this happens, we will write to you.

If your application is not objected to, we will change your details and write to tell you when your application is allowed.

We will also contact the Electoral Registration Officer from your old address so that your name can be removed from that register.

How to change your name

If you have recently changed your name you can update your details by filling in a Rolling Registration Form.  You need to sign your own form – someone else cannot do it for you.
