Air handling units
Ventilation and air-conditioning systems which are poorly installed or maintained may be a health risk to the public.
Air pollution
The Commercial Team of Environmental Health operates the Council's air quality monitoring station which monitors for fine particles and nitrogen dioxide. A monitoring programme for nitrogen dioxide is also carried out at 17 sites across the borough.
Asbestos
Residents and businesses may be given advice on what to do if they believe asbestos may be present in a building.

Pollution control - construction information
The authority monitors construction activities to minimise pollution caused by noise, dust and other nuisances.
Pollution control - Part B Authorisation
Some industrial techniques have potential to cause pollution. Since 1990 many of these processes have required an 'authorisation'to operate and they are also inspected annually. For processes that only have the potential to cause air pollution The Council is responsible for their inspection and regulation.
Pollution control - penalty notice
Part 3 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 requires the Council to take reasonable steps to investigate and, if appropriate, to take formal action to in the event of justified complaints of statutory nuisance.
Public health - cooling tower notification
All premises where cooling towers and evaporative condensers are situated must register with the Council under 'The Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992'.
Water
The Council work with the Environment Agency in a number of ways to prevent or control pollution.
