Universal Credit

Universal Credit is coming to Stevenage from 1 February 2016. This new benefit will replace:

  • Income Support
  • Income related employment and support allowance (ESA)
  • Income based jobseekers allowance
  • Housing benefit
  • Working/child tax credit

Universal Credit will be rolled out nationally during 2015/16 for people of working age. This means that initially, only single unemployed childless claimants who would previously have been eligible for jobseekers allowance will start claiming Universal Credit instead. The criteria for applying for Universal Credit currently is as follows:

Claimants must:

be singlenot be pregnant 
be a British national and normally be resident in Britainnot have given birth within the last 15 weeks
have a valid National Insurance number (excludes temporary National Insurance numbers)not have responsibility for children (including adopting or fostering a child) or provide care for any other person
be aged between 18 years and 60 years and six monthsnot be required by the Child Maintenance Enforcement commission (CMEC) to pay child maintenance
have a bank or building society account or Post Office card accountnot have a fit note (unless Work Capability Assessment (WCA) confirmed found fit for work)
not be homeless or in supported accommodationnot be in a period of self-certification awaiting a fit note
not own their own home (including part ownership)not be making the claim through a Personal Acting Body (PAB) / Corporating Acting Body (CAB) 
not have more than £6,000 in Savings and Capitalnot be a Company Director or in a limited liability partnership

You must also not be in education or training, be currently claiming Job Seekers Allowance, Employment Support Allowance, Incapacity Benefit, Severe Disablement Allowance or Income Support.

If you are currently working, your income must not exceed £338 in the next month.

Make sure you have the following information before you start:

  • your postcode
  • your National Insurance number (use this link if you do not know your NI number)
  • details of the bank, building society or credit union account you want Universal Credit paid into
  • your rent agreement (if you have one)
  • details of your savings or other capital
  • details of any income that’s not from work, eg from an insurance plan
  • details of any other benefits you’re getting

The Department for Work and Pensions is setting up local partnerships nationwide to provide local support to claimants.
