Stevenage through the ages

On a wooded hill in North Hertfordshire, a small community gathered in Saxon times and began to settle the land on which Stevenage now stands. They called it ‘Stigenace’, meaning ‘at the strong oak’. Communities settled at Chells, Woolenwick, Broadwater and Shephall. You may think that Stevenage is a recent creation and indeed the New Town is, but its history goes back much further than that.
