Stevenage Town Centre Watch

Shop-Watch-LogoStevenage Town Centre Watch is a partnership of local retailers, businesses, the police and other organisations. It aims to improve public safety and reduce crime and disorder in the town.

How does it work?

Data collecting / photograph sharing: By being a town centre Watch member you will have access to information on known thieves and other individuals carrying out criminal activities in the area. This includes photographs of persistent thieves and troublemakers. Having these details means that criminals can no longer enjoy the anonymity and freedom to target businesses.

The Radio Link: Members can be linked together by a radio system and therefore can receive or give information instantly. This allows members to broadcast details of any incidents to other scheme members. This can create an environment where you no longer feel in isolation and can rely on the support from others during a 'real time' crime problem and you can request or offer help in an emergency situation.

CCTV: CCTV can play a major part in crime prevention and detection. Combined with 'on the ground' Radio Link information, CCTV can track offenders and assist in their apprehension.

Why should I join?

The British Retail Consortium Survey revealed a worrying picture of retail crime in the UK with the total cost of crime and violence against staff showing significant increases. Despite a reduction in offences the cost of retail crime has significantly risen. The overall cost of retail crime has increased by 31 per cent to £1.4 billion. This is equivalent to 130,000 retail jobs.

Watch schemes in Hertfordshire have proven to be valuable sources of information sharing and have significantly helped to improve community safety in Stevenage. The Shop Watch scheme is fully supported by Stevenage Borough Council and Hertfordshire Constabulary. Local businesses are encouraged to register to Shop Watch to continue to improve information sharing between local businesses to ultimately make Stevenage a safer place for people that shop and work in the town.

When you become a member you will receive:

  • Regular updates on current 'criminal targets' and what they get up to.
