Future Town, Future Transport

We are currently consulting on a new Transport Strategy for the Borough and would love to hear your views.

The Stevenage Borough Local Plan sets out ambitious plans to deliver over 7,600 new homes, including a large-scale regeneration of the town centre. Ensuring an efficient and high quality transport network is key to supporting this growth. While the network was built to new town principles, and has a great many strengths, including a strategic place on the rail network, access to motorways, and excellent cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, it will need to adapt to ensure that local communities continue to be able to move around freely, and to improve access to jobs and services. This will include making the best use of emerging technologies, offering and encouraging alternatives to the private car, as well as increasing capacity within the network.

Bearing these things in mind, we would like to consult you on our new transport strategy: Future Town, Future Transport.

The Strategy seeks to establish Stevenage as a leader in sustainable transport, reflecting its original New Town design objectives. It establishes the key local transport issues and opportunities that exist in Stevenage, and sets out a vision and objectives for what will be delivered in the future. It is focused around four key themes:

  1. Connectivity: Improve connections between our residents to jobs and services, and business to markets.
  2. Liveable streets: Restore neighbourhood streets to places that our community can enjoy and be proud of.
  3. Active and healthy travel: Achieve a change in behaviour to encourage walking and cycling
  4. Green travel:  Reduce the carbon footprint of Stevenage‚Äôs travel movements and improve air quality.

The strategy sets out a comprehensive schedule of transport-related plans and projects in and around Stevenage, including what has been achieved so far and projects that are underway, to those that are planned or proposed for the future in the form of short and medium-term Action Plans.

The Borough Council will not be able to deliver this strategy alone, the projects included include those to be delivered by a wide range of agencies, including the Borough Council, Hertfordshire County Council (as Highways Authority), infrastructure operators and providers, and local business.

Future Town: Future Transport sets out how we will engage with a wide range of partners on projects in and around Stevenage to meet the vision and objectives of the Strategy. We are keen to hear your views on:

  • The Vision - Do you agree with it?
  • The Objectives - Do you think these are correct?
  • The Projects - Do you think that they are correct?

Are there any more you would like to see delivered?
Can you help to deliver any transport projects in Stevenage?
